Lacus.Peiso – the lake and its region
Around the year 50 AD, Pliny raved about “Lacus Peiso”, the largest steppe lake in Europe. Today it is called Lake Neusiedl – and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with over 300 days of sunshine a year.
The story behind the name
From Roman Pannonia to World Heritage
Lacus Peiso – this is what the Romans called today’s Lake Neusiedl (Hungarian: Fertő tó). Our house bears this name with pride: The region has been a cultivated land for two millennia, characterized by viticulture, steppe landscapes and the diversity of peoples.
The Pannonian microclimate provides the area with tomatoes, peppers and, more recently, even olives – and, thanks to the noble rot in autumn, some of the best sweet wines in the world.
Burgenland is still multicultural today: German, Croatian, Hungarian and Romani are the national languages here. You can feel this openness in every wine tavern.
